The following was written by Grandson, Frank L. Howland.
"They (Frank and Dora) made there home on his home place near Savanna, Ill for 4 years, then they moved to a farm in 1894/95 situated 3.5 miles southwest of Springville, Ia. where he farmed until his death. She moved to Cedar Rapids, Ia. and lived with Gladys Howland for several years and when Gladys married, she lived with one or the other of her children until her death at Ruth Pearson's."
"Dora was what she was called. She was short and fat. She was very nice to me. She loaned me $1,000 once when I was a vet student, so I could get married. I cancelled the marriage and repaid her, I was comfortable being broke, but very uncomfortable being in debt."
"Dora salted what ever she cooked to her taste, which was to salty for the rest of us. She provided us with lard, canned beef and salt pork and later she had a meat freezer locker in Marion, several miles from where we lived, and we drove in dad's truck to get meat. I enjoyed the ride and going into the locker which was very cold."
"Dora always wore the same dress and shoes as far as I can remember. She had a regular dress which was white with black flower blossoms about 1" in diameter."
